Reckless Orchard aim for Oasis of Calm
An appeal is being launched to raise funds for an "oasis of calm" at the heart of Broadmead in Bristol.
The trustees of John Wesley's first chapel, the New Room, between Broadmead and the Horsefair, want to transform the courtyard of the Broadmead entrance into an 18th Century-style garden.
Their fundraising target is £200,000, which would pay for Olveston-based landscape architects and Thornbury Chamber members, Reckless Orchard to turn the paved area into a formal garden to enhance the already existing statue of Wesley on horseback.
Reckless Orchard are also behind the design of the new paving and seating currently being installed along Broadmead as part of the city centre's redevelopment.
The chapel, known as The New Room, was built in 1739 by Wesley, one of Britain's most well-known religious figures.
It survived the bombings of the Second World War and then became part of the Broadmead Shopping Centre which emerged from the rubble in the 1950s.
Thousands of people visit the chapel every year, and as the opening of Cabot Circus draws close, the trustees of The New Room want to provide a peaceful area for shoppers to retreat to.
David Worthington, manager of the chapel, said: "As it stands, the Broadmead Courtyard is very uninspiring – it's essentially a glorified car park. We want to create a green space that complements the chapel for shoppers and everyone in Bristol to come and enjoy.
"The idea behind it is to make an oasis of calm. There is lots of retail space being provided as part of Cabot Circus, but not a lot of green space."
Part of The New Room's mission statement is to offer people passing through the centre of Bristol opportunities for reflection, challenge and spiritual encounter.
Mr Worthington said they wanted to contribute to the development work going on around them with the "greening" of the courtyard.
He said: "We were partly inspired by Cabot Circus, and also we want to do this work because we want to offer more to people than we do at the moment."
