Come and see the inspiring story of how Cuba coped when in the early 90s the USSR suddenly cut off imports of oil. With day-long power cuts and fuel queues and desperately short of food and seeds and, they achieved a remarkable transition from a highly industrialized society into small local organic agricultural communities.
This story of courage, resourcefulness and the power of community brings hope and inspiration to us as we face future problems caused Peak Oil, Climate Change and the Credit Crunch. Don’t miss it! All Welcome

It is the year 1908 on a cold December evening. In the darkness you can see little from the dim glow of flickering gas lights. As you enter the front door the hallway is cold and dark. The sitting room is warm from the bright fire in the hearth and adds some light to the oil lamp on the table. There is no television, no radio and no computer. Probably you will go to bed fairly early!
By comparison life today is bright, light with ready entertainment at home in the warm. But what about tomorrow? The planet needs an 80% reduction in Carbon Dioxide emissions if life on earth is to survive. Our nuclear power stations are ageing and closure is planned. How will we cope and what strategies do we need to generate power in the 21st Century.
Sustainable Thornbury is hosting a talk by Peter Marshall which will give an overview of power generation in the 21st Century and discuss possible strategies for the future. Do come along and join in what promises to be a lively debate! Admission free.
