Avon Fire and Rescue Service logo

Thornbury is lucky enough to have its own Fire Station with two engines and twenty retained firefighters.

They provide cover for the town and surrounding villages 24 hours a day, seven days a week, as part of Avon Fire and Rescue Service.

Barrie Houghton is Station Manager. If you need to contact him you can do so by email at or by phone on 0117 926 2061 x613.

As well as fighting fires and responding to other emergencies, the team play a key role in promoting community safety, visiting homes, schools and community groups to offer free safety advice.

Click here to read their fire safety advice.

If you'd like the firefighters to visit your house to carry out a free Home Fire Safety Visit and fit a free smoke alarm, click here to send your request.

If you're organising an outdoor event, and would like the team to bring their fire safety message along, contact Barrie Houghton above.

Thornbury Fire Station is available for events or station visits. Visitors can call in during weekly training on Mondays 6.30pm-9pm, or group visits (max. 20 people) can be arranged through Barrie Houghton above, or by clicking here.

If you are interested in becoming a firefighter, call in to the station on a Monday evening for an information pack, or click here.

Home Fire Safety Visits - Beware Bogus Callers

Local residents are being advised to be wary of bogus callers who have been telephoning homes in the area pretending to be firefighters wanting to arrange Home Fire Safety Visits.

Avon Fire & Rescue Service was made aware of the problem after a Thornbury man received a phone call from someone claiming to be from the organisation.

The bogus caller arranged to set up a visit at the man’s home – fortunately on the day of the visit the resident sensed all was not well when the man who appeared on his doorstep was not in fire service uniform, nor carrying any identification. His accomplice, who was sat in a car nearby, was not in a marked fire service vehicle.

Firefighters and staff from Avon Fire & Rescue Service carry out thousands of Home Fire Safety Visits each year as they are a vital way of promoting fire safety messages.

However, we will only telephone residents who have already requested a visit – we never cold call on the telephone.

Firefighters and staff who carry out Home Fire Safety Visits will not only wear fire service uniform, but also carry full identification and drive fully branded vehicles.

And if you are in any doubt as to whether or not the person on your doorstep is from Avon Fire & Rescue Service, you can call us at our Headquarters on 0117 926 2061 and we will be able to tell you if they are a genuine member of staff.
