Thomas Dagg gave the field to Thornbury in 1546, so we tend what must be some of the oldest allotments in the country.
There are 120 allotments, and the Association has over 100 members. It organises social events such as the Summer BBQ, the Autumn Talk, the Christmas Meal as well as distributing monthly newsletters, running the Allotment Shop and offering discounts to some local retailers.
Gillingstool Primary School has a large plot which offers all pupils the opportunity to grow and eat their own produce.
Membership costs just a couple of pounds a year, and brings many benefits. You don't need to be a plot holder to become a member. We have discounted seeds, competitive prices on gardening items, guest speakers and visits.
If you would like to become a member, or be added to the waiting list for a plot, click the website link below.

Thornbury Squares meet at Manorbrook School, where we dance to a variety of music, socialize and have a great deal of fun. All ages welcome. More details from Sue Elliott 01454 778795 or Ann Keates 01454 885058.
Our other evenings involve slide shows and talks. These are funded from the annual subscription of £12. The Christmas meeting is at an hotel with dinner and dance, and the summer event is often a Mystery Coach Tour to an out of the way pub.
Unlike when the Wine Circle began in the Seventies, home made wine is not often made these days, but some grape and elderberry wine is used at BBQs, and mulled wine at Christmas.
For more information, contact Dave Slocombe on Thornbury 413038.
We are always on the lookout for new committee members. If you're interested in youth involvement, we'd love you to join our stuctured support committee - but be prepared to be police checked.

The Thornbury & South Gloucestershire Model Railway Club is holding its 41st annual modelling and model railway exhibition. This exhibition has developed into one of the best-established local modelling exhibitions. It offers a diverse display of modelling and hobbies and is a well-received annual event in the town. This year there are 16 model railway layouts on display.
Neil Walker, the Exhibition Manager reports, “Modelling is a much-loved and diverse hobby and is reputably a declining hobby with the younger generations. Our objective is to help change that perception by promoting modelling to all and hopefully inspiring others to begin and/or develop modelling as a hobby. All the exhibiting societies welcome new members – please just ask for details.”
“Our exhibitors always make a point of talking to and involving our visitors to help promote modelling as a whole. It is always our aim to listen to our visitors’ interests, views and comments and as a result, we react by providing the variety and quality of exhibits to help satisfy as many modellers’ interests as we can every year. The last few years’ exhibitions were reported as being our best-ever exhibitions with regards to quality, quantity and the variety of the modelling displays. This year we aim to match that and hope to welcome a further increase in visitors who will all enjoy this year’s exhibition equally. Come along to the Chantry and don’t miss out on this exhibition.”
This year, there will be quality model railway layouts of various gauges on display. There will also be a brass locomotive construction demonstration and a range of railway modelling and construction demos. Here you can see and learn how model trains and layouts are built with a great opportunity to ask all those burning questions.
We again feature the Yate & Sodbury Model Boat Club who always provide a fine display of maritime modelling and there will be a full room of displays by the Model Bus Federation, who have been a regular supporter of our exhibition for a number of years now. Norman Juliff will delight us with his model automobiles collection and display, and will be delighted to discuss his models. The International Plastic Modellers Society should also provide a display that will be an inspiration and challenge to all modellers.
‘Rural Railways’ and Tony Wilcock provide two comprehensive trade stands offering a diverse range of kits and ready-to-run stock to support the keen modeller as a whole, together with a large variety of packaged model railway items – an opportunity to get those early Christmas presents for the modeller.
Admission: Adult £4, Concessions £3, Child (5-16) £2, Family (2+2) £10
A licensed bar will be open during the show and hot and cold refreshments will be available throughout the day. All in all it should be a great weekend – we hope to see you there.
