Thornbury Food Fairs
After the success of Thornbury's first Food Fair in May 2008, two new fair dates have been announced: 13th September and 6 December 2008.
The fair on 13th September will launch the start of the South Gloucestershire Local Food and Drink Festival – and will be advertised in the brochures which will be widely distributed throughout the county.
Hundreds of people turned out for the May event, which was organised by Thornbury Chamber of Commerce, and held on The Plain and along Castle Street.
It coincided with the opening of Thornbury Arts Festival, giving an added boost to attendance, as festival-goers brought additional people into town.
Thornbury has a successful Farmers Market, which takes place on a Thursday. The Saturday events are designed to allow people who are at work during the week to support local producers, slow food producers and market stalls.

Your comments
Here are your comments about the first Thornbury Food Fair:
Unfortunately I was not able to come to the May Food Market but I heard that it was fantastic. Sorry I missed it.
My only suggestion would be for it to be held once a month, for example the first Saturday of the month. This would be an easy date to remember. I think that if it was every week it would not be so special and if it was once a month people would look forward to it and note it in their diaries..
Where I lived previously, there were lots of markets and each one had their specific time of the month which people noted and came along to. Looking forward to the next market! (Eileen)
We loved the Food Fair! It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying the lovely weather and experiencing the best of Thornbury. Please pass on our thanks to the organisers and can we do it again? Also loved the Arts Festival. Barbara did a wonderful job keeping everything running so smoothly. Have you had any feedback about Thornbury FM? We loved that too! (Perry)
The market was a good start, I can understand people testing the water but really it SHOULD have been bigger. There could have been more home grown local produce, how about involving high standing local figures of the food world such as Jekka McVicar/local farm shops. Where was the fish stall, I didn't see it. No jam for £8.95 next time. Thank you. (The Hoopers)
Having just returned from a week’s holiday in southern France, and having visited both Thornbury and Eymet’s version of a market day, I wanted to leave some feedback.
Firstly, I thought that Thornbury’s May Market was superb in terms of its setting, variety of stalls and atmosphere. Having a young family, we were happy in the knowledge that they were safe wandering around. With it’s obvious success, I would hope that they become a much larger and regular event to the extent where the whole high street is closed off to traffic.
Secondly, it’s fair to say that the French market visited last week proved that it’s the type of event where the whole community gets involved and people travel from the surrounding area to sell and buy. From a size perspective, it was probably 10 times bigger but I think that with continued focus, Thornbury could have a regular market to be proud of. As a family, we much prefer to be given the opportunity of buying fresh local produce rather than filling the pockets of the likes of Tesco / Asda etc. Also, and possibly most importantly, I feel that it encourages a stronger community environment and provides a platform for people to take pride in their surroundings. (Julian)
I thought the May Food Fair was superb and look forward to the next one. We were lucky with the weather of course! The venue was an inspiration. Well done everyone concerned. (Rosemary)
I really loved the food market and thought it had a great buzz. I would think monthly at the very least would be appropriate. And hopefully we'd get more vegetables. Ideally people could count on it for their weekly shop... one day. I think Turnberrie's isn't central enough. What about where the Farmers' Market is? This will keep people in the centre and close to the other shops, which benefit from the increased footfall. (Heather)
Wow - what a great day that was. I did have a chat with the Mayor of Thornbury on the day and he mentioned about having the fair once a month - I think that would be a great idea, however the future turnout might well be weather dependant? (Jonathan)
