Welcome to the third THORNBURY IN BLOOM Newsletter produced to keep you and everyone in Thornbury in touch with what is going on and how you can provide help and support. If you have received this on behalf of a group or Organisation please pass it on, display it on a notice board or read out its contents at your meetings. We want everyone in Thornbury to feel part of our "Blooming" campaign!
• THANK-YOU to Ian Pollard - The Naked Gardener for a very interesting evening and thanks to The Rotary Club for their organisation of this event
• VOLUNTEERS If you or your organisation would be able to help our campaign in any way please let us know. It would be helpful to have some willing hands we could call on occasionally.
• THIS YEAR'S THEME, chosen by the Royal Horticultural Society, for the Britain in Bloom Competition is "Bloomin Wild"and has been chosen to encourage the use of natural plants in public places and to attract natural wildlife. If anyone has any ideas for projects that could be included in our campaign please let us know.
One of this year's projects is the planting of some large specimen native trees in the Mundy Playing fields. We aim to plant trees that will mature into beautiful specimens for the benefit of future generations. Trees also encourage wildlife such as birds, insects etc, they improve the general environment and provide shade for protection of adults and children while relaxing or playing on the field. We are offering the residents or businesses of Thornbury the opportunity to sponsor a tree at the cost of £300 each. This covers the cost of purchasing, planting, securing and maintaining the tree and the provision of a small commemorative plaque.
This is a wonderful way to ensure the name of a loved one lives on in Thornbury or to show that your business or organisation is part of and cares for our community. If you are a local group with just a hundred members that's only £3 each to support a very worthwhile project. We are only planting a few trees this spring but the project can be continued if there is enough support. Please contact our Chairman Robert Gorham on robert.gorham@blueyonder.co.uk , Sue at Thornbury Garden Shop, or pop into the Town Hall if you are interested in giving your support.
***DATE FOR YOUR DIARY --SATURDAY APRIL 14TH PLANT STALL IN THE ST MARY'S CENTRE. Please let us have your surplus plants to sell and come and purchase something different for yourself! ***
